New Jersey Sierra Club Endorses Wisniewski for Assembly
August 26, 2009
(SAYREVILLE) – The New Jersey chapter of the Sierra Club, the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization, today announced their endorsement of John Wisniewski in his bid to represent the 19th Legislative District in the General Assembly.
“Preserving New Jersey′s diminishing green spaces and farmland is crucial to ensuring that future generations of New Jerseyans have clean air to breathe and clean water to drink,” said Assemblyman Wisniewski. “Having the support of the Sierra Club means having more than a century of experience fighting for a cleaner environment on our side.”
Wisniewski worked to secure state grants towards preserving a 16.75 acre farm, the last farm operating in the 19th Legislative District, from almost certain development. The development rights were purchased by the Borough of Sayreville for $3.5 million, with nearly $2.6 million coming from state agricultural grants.
“In its efforts to fight rampant overdevelopment and sprawl and focus on smart planning, the work of the Sierra Club is crucial to protecting New Jersey′s quality of life,” said Assemblyman Wisniewski. “I look forward to partnering with Sierra Club members throughout the district to ensure our shared message of conservation and preservation is heard loud and clear.”
The Sierra Club traces its roots to 1892, when noted conservationist John Muir founded the organization. Muir is widely credited with influencing President Theodore Roosevelt to create the nation′s first national parks.
The Sierra Club boasts an estimated 20,000 members in New Jersey, the tenth largest of the organization′s 65 chapters in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The 19th Legislative District includes the municipalities of Woodbridge, Sayreville, Carteret, Perth Amboy, and South Amboy.
